Dear Evie and Dee: Keeping Secrets

Dear Evie and Dee,

I’m hiding this secret from my family and I know if I told them that they would never accept me for who I truly am. It’s difficult to keep living this lie and I feel guilty for never being honest. I’m not sure how to cope with it.

Sincerely,

Lying to My Family

Dear Lying to My Family,

Family situations can be tough. Most of the time, it is better to not keep secrets from people that you are close to. You might be surprised that once you tell them, they are more accepting than you think. If you are close to your family, then the best thing to do is tell them sooner rather than later.  Even if they are not accepting at first, they love you and will come to terms with it. However, if you are genuinely scared that they would not accept you, then this a different case. If you are not particularly close to your family, then tell somebody that you do trust. This could be a close friend, a teacher, or anyone that could help get you through this. Never hide who you are, especially from the people you love. The people that truly care about you will love you no matter what.

Sincerely,

Evie and Dee
