After former Mayor Eric Haas suffered a stroke in early Sept., 2025, the city went through a leadership change in the mayor’s office. Andrew Ellison was elected to step up and take place in that role as interim mayor. Ellison shares what he is going to accomplish and how he is planning to guide this community through the unexpected transition.
With Ellison taking full responsibility over mayoral duties, he shares his future goals, how he is approaching the new authority roles and what changes he may begin to make. Ellison describes his transition so far.
“So far the transition into office has been smooth. I’ve focused on listening and building relationships with city staff,” Ellison said, “the most significant adjustment has been moving quickly from strategy to execution and balancing priorities.”
The big leap in responsibility and leadership is immense. Additionally, Ellison mentions what his immediate priorities are, regarding the pressure.
“My immediate priorities are making sure city services and public safety are continuing at the high level they have been for years,” Ellison said.
Moreover, the strategies that Ellison will utilize to build strong working relationships with city staff, council members and community partners are crucial for the future of the environment.
“Having open lines of communication and listening to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard,” Ellison said.
Ellison emphasizes the importance of making sure things are in order before making any changes.
“Before I make any changes, I intend to interview each department head to make sure I have a good understanding of everyone as it is now,” Ellison said.
When measuring or calculating success as a mayor is crucial, however a difficult task.
“I will gauge success by how financially stable our city budget is, also by how residents view how transparent the city government is under my control,” Ellison said.
There is always the lingering question of identifying the biggest challenge facing the city and describing the plans to eliminate it. However, Ellison comes equipped with a plan.
“The biggest challenge facing the city is trust. Residents deserve to trust the city with their tax dollars, and many do not,” Ellison said. “I have already been working to ensure fiscal responsibility and believe we are almost there.”
