On Wednesday, September 18th at 7:00pm the Highlands varsity girls volleyball team played against Villa Madonna Academy. The volleyball game was hosted at Villa Madonna’s gym and not a very close game, Highlands performing excellently against the Villa Madonna girls.
Highlands started off strong, beating Villa Madonna in the first set 25-4, Villa Madonna attempted to make a comeback in the second set with the set’s score as 25-22. The third set was the closest with a score of 25-22, but despite the close final set, the girls varsity team was still able to beat Villa Madonna in all three sets, with the final score 3-0, a Highlands win.
Surprisingly, a few years ago the results of Highlands against Villa Madonna ended very differently. Hayden Gessner (11) said: “We were very happy about the win because a few years ago we lost to them and it was quite emotional, so beating Villa Madonna created a new sense of confidence about where we could be.”
The girls varsity team has improved a lot in the recent years, the overall team stats coming in revealed the girls had a total of 42 kills, which is when an attack is un returnable by the opposing team (when a player scores a point). 49 digs, which is when a player prevents the ball from touching the ground, and 36 assists.
Highlands volleyball is now 3rd in the Region, close behind Ryle and St. Henry. The next upcoming game is Wednesday, September 25th in Dayton, Ohio. Their next home game is Thursday, September 26th playing Boone County.
