Music lovers “wrap” up the year: exploring Spotify Wrapped

Categories:

Every December, Spotify Wrapped becomes a popular topic on social media as users are able to look back at their year in music. This year, Spotify added even more features and fun ways to explore listening patterns. Wrapped isn’t just a list of songs anymore, it’s a personalized summary that shows what people listened to most and how their taste has changed throughout the year.

Spotify Wrapped is a yearly recap that displays listeners’ top songs, artists, genres, podcasts, and more. It uses the data of everything listened to during the year to create an interactive slide-like presentation and animation, which users can scroll through and share to different social media, like Snapchat and Instagram.

Spotify Wrapped 2025 includes both classic features and a set of brand-new features:

“The Classics”

  • Minutes listened: The total time spent listening across music, podcasts, and audiobooks
  • Top songs + playlist: The top five songs of the year and a personalized Your Top Songs 2025 playlist, which now will show the stream count of each of a person’s top 100 songs
  • Top Artists: The top-most played artists
  • Top Genres: A breakdown of the most listened to musical genres
  • Artist Clip: A thank-you video from one of the listeners’ top artists

“What’s New”

  • Listening Age: Compares the release years of listeners’ favorite songs to others in their age group
  • Top Songs Quiz: An interactive game where listeners guess which song they played the most
  • Top Albums: Highlights the albums listened to over and over
  • Top Artist Sprint: A month-by-month “race” showing how the top five artists fought for the #1 spot
  • Fan Leaderboard: Reveals where listeners rank among global listeners of their top artist
  • Clubs: Places listeners into one of 6 listening “styles” based on listening patterns
  • Listening Archive: Personalized “snapshots” of listeners’ most memorable streaming days, powered by AI.

A survey of students was conducted to see what Spotify Wrapped looks like at Highlands, examining listening trends across the school.

The survey showed clear patterns in genre preferences. The top genre was pop, chosen by many students. Some more popular genres included Indie Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, and Alternative Rock.

The most frequently listed top artist was Zach Bryan. Other popular artists included Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Mac Miller.

Listening time also varied across the school. The average minutes listened was 56,976 minutes, with the highest total reaching 166,777 and the lowest at 5,647.

While some similarities were found, most students’ music taste is never the same, and preferences can differ due to grade level or gender.

After looking at what students have been listening to, it’s clear that Spotify Wrapped is about more than just numbers. Spotify Wrapped is a fun way to look back on the music that shaped the year. It shows what people like and brings everyone together through music. Anybody can share their Wrapped and compare with friends and family.
