Former VP Dick Cheney, powerful and instrumental in the Bush administration, war in Iraq and Republican Party, died Monday due to pneumonia, cardiac, and vascular disease.
Cheney is known most influentially for his role in the push for the war in Iraq. He was instrumental in the War on Terror, and senators like Mitch McConnell of Kentucky claimed that his steady presence and deep patriotism made our country the haven of First Amendment rights that it is. He claimed Cheney was “steady counsel” and highly reliable as a leader in the country’s history and legacy in the future.
As well, in order to honor the former VP, the White House lowered its flag to half mast on Nov. 4th, in recognition of his lifetime of service. However, according to USA TODAY, President Trump “has an antagonistic relationship with the Cheney family and has not commented on the Republican’s passing…”
According to USA TODAY, after his term ended in 2009, he openly opposed President Trump, and even “voted for Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 election.”
Despite this, many of his fellow Republicans mourn the loss of a man they all admired and looked up to.
From a Congressman from Wyoming, secretary to the elderly President George H.W. Bush, Deputy Chief of Staff, and later White House Chief of Staff for President Gerald Ford.
“I asked him to join my ticket in 2000 after first enlisting him to help me find the best running mate. In our long discussions about the qualities a vice president should have – deep experience, mature judgment, character, loyalty – I realized that Dick Cheney was the one I needed,” said Bush.
Despite politics, those of his family will mourn his loss the most.
His wife and kids made a statement to USA TODAY stating, “Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing…We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”
Former VP Cheney will be remembered for his kindness, love, and honor, and his commitment to foreign policy, leadership, and patriotism.
