Among the many clubs Highlands High School has, there is also a new club this year called the Student Leadership Club. It was designed to allow students to explore leadership opportunities outside the classroom and try new experiences within the realm of volunteering, planning, and communicating with their peers.
Despite it being only the first year that the club has been running, it has been quite a success so far. 147 students have joined the group, and they recently had their first meeting on October 10.
Their first meeting included two student leaders, Shelby Shields (12) and Emme Orme (12), introducing themselves to the rest of the members. As the club is mostly student-run with ideas and structure from their officers, and have advisors to help along the way.
“Our first meeting was just an informational meeting with some discussion of service, and we had a lot of people show up which was really exciting for us,” President Shields said.
The club is focused on creating a space for students to develop roles as leaders in their school and community. This is achieved by creating a safe space for expressing ideas and finding ways to take on leadership roles.
“Being a part of this club has been really special, students can learn how to take more leadership around school and I’m so glad I have a role in it,” Membership coordinator Annie Kuhnhein (11) said.
They have already had a jump start in activities for the club, with a successful fundraising car wash. During the car wash, they raised money for upcoming leadership projects and bonded as a group.
Their next step in interacting within the community is to partake in several service projects, which will further strengthen their ties to the school and community leadership as a whole.
As the club continues to grow and succeed, it is safe to say that many great things will come out of it. Students will further grow as individuals while developing their leadership skills for the future.
