The smell of fresh flowers and the air from the open windows seeps into the room, the dining room is filled with food that honors those being celebrated on this special day. Families are gathered around to celebrate the mothers and grandmothers who support their goals and ambitions.
This Mother’s Day falls on May 11. It is a day full of celebration for mothers and grandmothers alike. It is more than just a holiday on the calendar, it’s a chance to show appreciation for the women who shape people’s lives. To moms and grandmothers to stepmothers, guardians, and even mother figures like teachers or mentors, this day is set aside to recognize their love, care, and sacrifices.

It can be easy for high school students to get caught up with school, extracurricular, etc., but Mother’s Day is a reminder to pause and give thanks to the women who keep them going.
Mother’s Day isn’t just about gifts, it is about gratitude. While flowers and cards are traditional, the most meaningful part of the day comes from sincere gestures.
“My dad and I usually fix my mom’s breakfast in bed every year for Mother’s day. We try to make it special for her because she does so much for our family,” Taylor Janosick (10) said.
Not everyone has the same experience when it comes to moms. Some students live with grandmothers, aunts, or other guardians. That’s why Mother’s Day can be personal and emotional.
It is a moment to recognize whoever has shown that motherly love in whatever form it comes.
At school, students often forget where much of their success comes from. They came from the support system students have at home. The impact of a mother figure lasts far beyond high school.

Celebrating Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, most moms will say they’d rather have something heartfelt than flashy. Some examples are breakfast in bed, a handmade card, or spending time together, all of these things can mean more than any store-bought gift.
It is also important to recognize the school moms, the teacher, counselors, and staff who support students in big and small ways everyday. Many teachers at Highlands high school are moms who have responsibilities at home and at school with their dedication to both their family and students.
“Mother’s day is super special for my family. We go over to my mom’s house and celebrate the day, it’s lovely,” English teacher Katie Simon said.
Mother’s Day is a reminder to recognize these quiet heroes on the side lines that go beyond their job descriptions to care for their students.
As high schoolers grow more independent their appreciation for moms often grows too. They begin to understand the sacrifices a mom makes for their child. Mother’s Day gives students the opportunity to reconnect and reflect on what their mothers mean to them.
“My mom does so much for my siblings and I, from taking us to our activities to school to just being there for us on our bad days. She’s truly the best,” Gabby Simon (10) said.

Whether celebrating with brunch or just a quiet moment together, remember what the day is really about recognition, gratitude, and love.
“My mother has been my number one supporter in life, no matter where I’ve been in my life. The good and bad choices that I’ve made in all of my 32 years of living, she has been that one person in my corner always,” math teacher Ryan Mahoney said.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible women who continue to support their families everyday.
