Traditionally, Highlands High School elections take place during students’ junior year.
However, this year is different.
There is a vacancy in the senior class with the president, causing an election. The vacancy also caused a domino effect, which has allowed moving people up in positions.
This year’s senior class will hold another election for a new class representative. The class reps from last year were Ellie Mohr and Morgan Herald. This year, Mohr has chosen to become the vice president while Herald has decided to stay a representative.
Senior Class Secretary Haylee Hogie noted, “I feel really good about the situation and I think Ellie will do really well in the vice president position. I think whoever the class rep is will be a good candidate as well.”
The process of being a candidate can be stressful, but also enjoyable. The election process will involve nominations, campaigning, and a final vote, allowing all the senior students to have their say in choosing the next class representative.
With the search for a new representative, the ranking has moved around: Torin Bryant has moved to president, Ellie Mohr has moved to vice president, Max Hamilton is still the treasurer, Haylee Hogie is still the secretary, and Morgan Herald has stayed as a class representative.
Hamilton explained his thoughts, “I think it’s a pretty justified reason to re-run things. I think we will be able to get more done in this way.”
The candidates running for class representative are Emme Orme, Ella Cunningham, Shelby Shields, and Sarah Jones.
These candidates have all gotten to know their peers over time and have made some strong connections that can help them win the election. Each of the candidates has a unique quality that makes them stand out as a candidate.
Candidate Shelby Shields said, “I’ve already had leadership roles and experience, and obviously one of the most important things class officers do is plan prom. I’ve been planning homecoming for the past four years as a member of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). I think I’d be a beneficial leader.”
Although this is an unusual situation, it is still very important to have another class representative speak for the class of 2025.
