The varsity boys rally late but fall in extras to Covington Catholic 8–6

Highlands’ varsity boys faced Covington Catholic on Wednesday, March 25, at Highlands Hills Park, falling 8–6 in a competitive game that went into extra innings.

The birds were down 5–0. However, in the bottom of the final inning, Highlands had an impressive comeback, scoring five runs to tie the game 5–5 and force extra innings.

Offensively, Highlands recorded 12 hits in 38 at-bats, finishing with a .316 team batting average. Brooks Hendrix (12) led the team with 3 hits and 2 RBIs, while Peyton Zimmerman (11)  added 2 hits and 1 RBI. Jaxon Roderick (11) and Sam Ruschman (12) each contributed with hits and RBIs to help.

On the mound, Patrick Davidson (12) pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 5 runs while striking out 5. Ronan Thaler (11) also threw 4.1 innings with 5 strikeouts, and Jack Price (12) closed the pitching. 

Despite the extra innings, Covington Catholic scored three runs while holding Highlands to one, securing the 8–6 win.

The Highlands’ varsity team will play its next game against Sycamore on March 27, at Sycamore, with a start time of 5:00 p.m.
