The varsity girls finish off Newport Central Catholic in the 36th District Tournament 49-42

Highlands’ varsity girls played Newport Central Catholic on Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Ben Flora gymnasium. The birds won 49-42, winning the whole 36 District Tournament. 

Offensively, Highlands made 16 total field goals on 35 attempts, shooting at 45.7%. The birds also made 7 three-pointers out of 18 attempts, which ended in 38.9%. 

At the free throw line, Highlands went 10-for-16, which is 62.5%. The team also had a total of 23 rebounds.   

Kaylee Mills (12) led Highlands with 13 points, while Bailey Richey (9), Katie Bucher (12), and Avery Barber (12) followed with 8 points.

The Highlands’ varsity team beat Cooper in the first round of the 9th Region Tournament and will be moving on to play Notre Dame Academy on March 2, at Truist Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky University, with tip-off at 6:30 p.m.

Andrea Suarez Espinosa is a sophomore at Highlands High School. She is on the Track and Field team and enjoys spending most of her time with family and friends. Andrea spends a lot of time investing in her relationship with God through her Christian community and is involved in Highlands Navigators. She has been in publications for 2 years and keeps going for her interest in photography. She would aspire to keep taking photography more seriously in the coming years at Highlands.

Maggie Frimming is a Freshman at Highlands and is taking Journalism this year. She is super excited to see where Journalism will take her in the future. Maggie dances and teaches at Manyet Dance and spends most of her time there after school. Maggie also spends her free time golfing with her dad and is playing for the Highlands team next year. Her favorite part of Journalism is getting to capture special moments for people, and she loves being able to put a smile on their faces. She is super excited to see where Journalism will take her in the future.
