Birds keep region title

On Jan. 31, the Highlands Swim and Dive Team competed in finals for the 2026 Regional Championships. The birds won the combined, keeping their regional title, and were runner-ups for both the girls and boys individually. 

The girls started off the meet strong, by getting second place in the 200 medley relay, then 2nd in the 200 free relay, and in the 400 free relay. The relay contributors were Maggie Meyers (8), Taryn Ripley (9), Ella Kate Reynolds (9), Vivian Winkler (9), Ragan Moore (12), Keira Kobida (11), and Morgan Ripley (7).

The boys also had outstanding relay performances, coming in as runner-ups in the 200 free relay and the 400 free relay, with teams of Ryan Schaber (11), Noah Gracey (12), Charlie Herfel (12), Chanith Abeysinghe (11), Charlie Golden (11), Elliot Meyers (9), and Luke Deegan (11). The boys also finished with the title of regional champions in the 200 medley relay with Luke Deegan (11), Noah Gracey (12), Charlie Herfel (12), and Chanith Abeysinghe (11). 

Individual regional champions were Ragan Moore (12) in the 50 free, Noah Gracey (12) in the 100 fly, Keira Kobida (11) in the 100 free, and Luke Deegan (11) in the 100 back. 

Overall, the team did well and had a lot of swimmers advance to the first round of state on Feb. 7.

Taryn Ripley is a freshman at Highlands and has been in the journalism program for one year. She swims competitively for the Highlands varsity team and club. She enjoys spending time with family, watching movies, doing art, and hanging out with friends. She is looking forward to seeing what the rest of the year will bring in Journalism.
