The one-acts are highly anticipated performances every year. These are short 30-40 minute shows that are fully run by high school students. These students either direct these shows or write and direct them. This is a great opportunity for students to gain leadership qualities within the arts.
This year, there were seven one-acts put on by students. These included those in the directing portion of the class, Henry Weghorst (11) with “Flowers for Algernon” and Rafe Pinkston (12) with “The AI Play” as well as those in the writing sector, Noah Varland (12) with “Whiteboard the Great”, Jake Hagerty (12) with “The Little Student Who Thunk”, James Wilson (12) with “Dude, Where’s My Sandwich”, Nellie Albritton (12) with “The Basement”, and Dee Robinson (12) with “Juvenile Delinquency.”
These students worked very hard in class each day to write, cast, and direct these one-acts while simultaneously ensuring everything backstage goes according to plan.
“[This class] introduced me to the world of directing and playwriting and taught me the importance of everything not just on the stage, but behind the scenes,” Hagerty (12) said.
These performances were an amazing opportunity for new and current theater members to enjoy being part of a show. Each student who was a part of these one-acts worked for many hours perfecting these shows.
“I think others should take this class because it’s a great way to share your work with others,” Robinson (12) said.
If students missed this round, there are still two more performance nights available, Feb. 26 and 27. Be sure to support these dedicated students.
