Beginning this month, the new film and broadcasting club is up and running at Highlands. Although Highlands has had a very successful broadcasting course, bringing daily news to the community, it has now expanded into an after school club to allow more exposure.
During the club’s meetings, they touch on animation, drones, streaming, and more. This club is self-lead, offering a ton of help from other students. Collaboration skills are encouraged in this club as well as just personal skills.
“You get to develop your own skills as well as gain experience with collaboration. Overall, I think it’s a great club and opportunity,” said social media officer Grace Burnett (10).
Not only does the club work on individual skills, but they also participate in fun challenges. Recently, club members took part in a 48 hour film fest where members were tasked with creating a short horror film in just two days.
Club leader Liam Delaney (12) explained, “We had about 24 participating members, five teams with qualifying films. It was super fun to take part in.”
Upcoming plans for the club include a second film fest in the spring. Once the date is set, students will draw a theme for the challenge out of a hat and create a film around it.
“There is a second film fest that we do in the spring, and it is not limited to the class. Anyone can do it; you pull your theme out a hat and make something out of it. Everyone really enjoys it,” Burnett explained.
Joining the club is highly recommended by the members as they’ve experienced more growth in their skills and fun times with the other members.
“I highly suggest joining because we are together and hanging out, and we all have one thing in common that we all love. A lot of students there have never touched a camera, and they are just growing tremendously there,” said Ashton Willis (12), a member of the club.
Students interested in film or broadcasting, no matter their skill level, are highly encouraged to check out the club!
