October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and was first celebrated in 1985, where it was called ‘Pink October’.
People celebrate Pink October by wearing pink, specifically a pink ribbon, which helps raise awareness of the cause.
Highlands High School will recognize breast cancer and help spread awareness. On October 25, the Highlands football team will be playing Scott High School, which is also the homecoming game, and the theme is pink out.
Student section leader Shelby Shields (12) said, “I’m excited for the game to come and to also be wearing pink for breast cancer awareness month.”
Raising money for people with breast cancer can be a big help. Highlands offers the option to purchase a long sleeve shirt for $15 or a crewneck for $25, where the money gets donated to Chicks and Chucks.
Student section leader Torin Bryant (12) said, “The shirt sales and those proceeds go to the foundation for five dollars.”
Chicks and Chucks is meant to raise awareness for breast cancer. Their goal is to support and assist local breast cancer patients and their loved ones. Cathy Halloran runs Chicks and Chucks and is a breast cancer survivor. She is very devoted to making sure that this cause is recognized and not forgotten.
Halloran said, “This foundation enables the privilege of helping others, validating their concerns, supplying hope when a patient feels hopeless.”
Recognizing breast cancer awareness and getting involved in any way is important.
