From 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., people are listening to the laughter during lunch, the quiet conversations in the classroom and even the loud scream filled laughter over a joke in the hallway. Some may hear quotes that stick with them, music that cannot be forgotten and so much more.
At Highlands, school spirit is the sound that echoes through the halls the most. Whether it’s during sports season or just a regular day, certain phrases certainly bring students together.
“‘Cake eaters’ is the phrase I hear the most. It carries team spirit. It brings me enthusiasm for our school,” Avery Gonzalez (11) said.
These phrases don’t just appear during big events; they pop up in everyday moments. Over time, these small, repeated sayings become a part of the school personality as a whole.
Another frequently mentioned part of everyday sounds is the constant energy between students. Teachers often notice these small interactions that make the environment feel supportive and upbeat more.
“I hear students helping others in the halls, it’s always a needed energy that those students bring,” Culinary teacher Kelsey Sentney said.
Moments like these show how the sounds of school aren’t just jokes or random things, they are a reflection of the atmosphere Highlands students have created together. From greetings in the morning to laughter in class, those everyday sounds shape how people experience their day.
The positive energy is something students notice as well. Even in the mornings or on busy days, the voices in the halls can always keep the mood light and encouraging.
“I love hearing a good morning whenever you walk into the building. I feel like there’s just so much laughter, always. It’s just a very positive feeling,” Addyson Kent (12) said.
It’s the everyday noises that students may not always notice that create the feeling of being a part of the school community.
All these voices, jokes, greetings, and moments of laughter blend together into something so much more than just any other school day; they create a soundtrack that plays all day long. Whether it’s a common phrase, a burst of music in the hallway or a simple “good morning,” these moments fill the building with energy and personality, turning an ordinary day into something students and teachers will always remember.
