Hundreds of people in the audience wait for the show to begin. Multiple teams line up to impress the judges. As the lights dim, a hush rolls over the crowd and the first routine begins.
The Highlands High School dance team has had a very successful season, being first in regionals for pom and hip-hop.
This year, they made it to state and won the title of state champion in both their pom and hip-hop routines.
“It felt surreal winning both hip-hop and pom at state, this year has been so successful for our team,” varsity dancer Drew Ellison (9) said.
They faced Dupont Manual High School, Male High School, North Laurel High School, Assumption High School, Lafayette High School, and Shelby County High School.
“We prepared by spending all of our free time rehearsing and scheduling extra practices, in the end, it was all worth it,” varsity dancer Saryn Stepner (10) said.
For pom, third place went to Dupont Manual High School and runner-up went to Male High School. For hip-hop, third place went to North Laurel High School and runner-up went to Assumption High School.
This amazing accomplishment set school history.
