On Tuesday, Oct. 22 the Highlands High School varsity volleyball team won the 36th District championship against Newport Central Catholic 3-0, making them this year’s district champion. This victory brings these blue birds one step closer to making it to the state tournament.
On offense, The Highlands’ Bluebirds had excellent communication and teamwork which led them to win each set by over 10 points.
Junior Hayden Gessner (11) managed to win the MVP award with 11 digs. Gessner said, “I gave it my all and played with so much drive and it showed through my performance.”
Seniors Ella Cox (12) and Lyla Bottom (12) both won the all-tournament team award for their outstanding performance at the district tournament. Bottom stated, “I’m a team captain, and I’m a loud talker on the court so I think that could be one of the reasons even though everyone is great on the team and it was a very hard decision.”
By the end of the game, The Highlands’ Bluebirds had 37 kills 10 assists 44 digs 36 ball handling. Gessner added, “I’m really proud of the team this year, we have been working really hard.”
Since this article was written, the volleyball team has moved on to the regional semi-finals by beating Cooper 3-0. The semi-finals will be held at 5:30 on Tuesday, Oct 29th at St. Henry.
