We are the Champions: Highlands Girls Basketball Team beats Newport Central Catholic to win the District Title

Yesterday, the girls’ basketball team took on Newport Central Catholic (NCC) at 6:00 at Highlands.

The game started close, with the lead going back and forth. But, Highlands ended the quarter up 1 point, with the score being 15 to 14.

After the first quarter, Highlands held NCC to 2 points in the second quarter. This helped Highlands to gain the lead of 31-16 at halftime. 

At halftime, Sophomore Marissa Green had 14 points, Senior Alyssa Harris and Freshmen Saylor Macke and Natalie Hinegardner each had 5 points, and Sophomore Adrienne Harris had 2. 

Highlands continued to come out strong in the 3rd quarter scoring 17 points while holding NCC to 10 points. This helped Highlands to maintain their lead and keep the momentum going to finish the quarter with a score of 48-26.

With the score in their favor, the birds continued to go on runs to end the game with a score of 67-36. 

By the end of the game, Green had 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 blocks, earning herself her third career triple-double. Also in that game, Green had a major milestone of getting her 500th rebound. 

Alyssa ended the game with 15 points, Macke with 11 points, Freshman Avery Barber with 6 points, Hinegardner with 5 points, Freshman Katie Bucher with 4 points, and Adrienne with 2.

The All-Tournament Teams were rewarded to Bucher and Alyssa, and the MVP Award went to Green.

Winning the District Championship gives the Ladybirds a 1 seed in the 9th Region Tournament. The drawing for the bracket with be today, Friday, February 4 at 4:00.
