Last night, the varsity girls basketball team owned the court during a nail-biting game against Newport Central Catholic High School (NCC) at 7:30 p.m., ending with a score of 54-39, Highlands. With this win, the Ladybirds stand at six wins and three losses this season.

Senior Emma Mallery reflected on the tough game, saying, “Throughout the game, I felt good. It was definitely a physical game, but the team stayed in the game mentally. The coaches prepared us well and it paid off in the end.”

The Birds took the lead 18-9 by the end of the first quarter. The NCC Thoroughbreds quickly caught up during the second quarter, making the crowd go wild. By halftime, however, HHS continued their lead, 22-21. The Ladybirds brought back their momentum after halftime, leading 34-30, then finishing 54-39 by the end of the game.

Mallery remains hopeful after this successful game, stating, “It was awesome to beat [NCC] as they are our rivals. Now we are the number one seed in the district game.”

The Ladybirds’ next game will be against Dixie Heights this Friday, January 29. The freshman team will play at 4:45 p.m., junior varsity at 6:00 p.m., and varsity at 7:30 p.m. Tune in on our YouTube channel, HHSFilmandBroadcast, to watch the varsity team. Go Birds!
