Hoops for Hunger

Highlands High School Basketball celebrated their 3rd annual Hoops for Hunger event this past Tuesday night, on November 20th. This fundraiser was sponsored by both Kelsey Chevrolet as well as Huff Realty.

Hoops for Hunger took place in the Highlands High School Athletic Center at 7:00 pm. In order to gain admission to the game, you could have either donated a minimum of 2 canned goods, or any monetary donation.

At 7:00 pm, began the boys and girls team scrimmages. Both the boy’s and girl’s teams, of each level (Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity) participated. In between the games, the dance and cheer squads performed for the fans to pep them up.

Events alternated all throughout night from basketball scrimmages and shootouts, to the dance/cheer team’s performances, to even blindfolded search races.

Athletic Director, Kevin Nieporte, reported the events grand total of $600 in cash and 40 full bins of food. They money and canned food will be evenly distributed between Newport’s Hosea House and Brighton Center.

According to Nieporte, “Overall the event went very well. There is no cap on the number of donations we will take, so if someone wants to donate $1,000, we will happily accept it. As for the donations from the player’s parents and other, etc. the amount collected along with the number of canned food was really something special.”
