A new school year has begun and Highlands High School is excited to introduce a new English teacher, Joni Ficke, who both students and teachers are eager to welcome.
Ficke graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from NKU, and a Masters degree in Middle School Education from Thomas Moore University.
Ficke used to teach grades 6-8 for 7 years. However, she is new to teaching at the high school level. Ficke said, “Being that this is my first year teaching at the high school level, I knew naturally an obstacle would be making sure I am current on the content– it has been a long time since I was in high school myself taking my English classes.”
While settling into room 218, Ficke shared her thoughts on the job, “No matter the level of my experience, I always start off a bit nervous for any new position; but as time passes and one gets comfortable with their job, everything becomes second nature.”
She has more talents than just teaching. In her free time she likes to spend time with her pups, family and friends.
Ficke has many aspirations for the new year.
“My expectations for this year are to watch my students grow as learners and individuals, along with myself as I grow as an educator at the high school level. I spent my last four and a half years teaching middle school.”
What inspired her to teach was working with elementary students in Covington, where she started as a substitute teacher. Ficke claimed that she felt at home in the classroom, so this encouraged her to obtain a degree in education.
Hope Barton (9) shared her thoughts on Ficke.
“Mrs. Ficke is really nice and she makes the class fun. She explains things really well and makes it easy for you to learn. She likes to get your opinion and keep you engaged.”
Assistant principal Jennifer Nash, who Ficke had taken the position of, said, “I’m always excited for new people, and I have known her for a very long time so I know she’s awesome. I am very excited for the kids to have her this year.”
Highlands is thrilled to welcome Ficke to the nest.
