The Uconn Huskies men’s team returned to the big stage to take on the Purdue Boilermakers on Monday, April 9, 2024. The Huskies beat the Boilermakers 75-60, becoming the first team to win back-to-back National Championships since the Florida Gators in 2006 and 2007.
With this win, the Huskies claim their 6 national title and set themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the NCAA, 21st century.
Uconn’s dominance mainly became present in 2017 after the hiring of new Head Coach, Dan Hurley. Hurley is 104-55 overall with the Huskies and is 8-4 in tournament games.
They are one of two teams to win back-to-back men’s title games by 15 or more points. The Huskies were unstoppable all season, going 37-3, and ending with a 13-game win streak.
While Purdue had the dominant force of Zach Edey in the paint for the majority of the game, Uconn was able to battle through his tough defense and outscore the Boilermakers by 15. Edey had an excellent college career but was unable to fully complete it with a national championship win.
Purdue will lose their star center to the NBA next year but hope to carry their experience into the 2024-2025 season.
The Huskies were consistent all year and showed signs of excellent teamwork. With no outstanding players on the roster, the Huskies are the most selfless, strategic team in the NCAA right now.
Their determination and willingness to play together show on the big stage. While Uconn is able to celebrate once again in their blue and gray confetti, we must think about the 2024-2025 season.
Can Uconn three-peat? Will Purdue finally get their first collegiate national win? Or will there be an underdog team rising from the ashes to take Uconn off the throne?
