NOTE: Students from the eighth grade yearbook class will write an article each quarter for the Hilltopper.
From solving a Rubik’s Cube in under a minute, having double jointed thumbs, shaping a clover with a tongue, to doing a back tuck, hidden talents show a side of students that most people don’t see every day. Isaiah Parritt (6), Jillian Steffen (7), Addie Hood (8), and Ava Muchmore (7) are just some examples of the many students whose unique abilities make HMS an interesting and exciting place. These talents not only are cool but also show the creativity that students bring to the school community.
One hidden talent comes from Parritt (6). Parritt (6) can solve a Rubik’s Cube in under a minute. He discovered his talent with help from his friends and family. He practices often and even competes. At a talent show, he solved the cube in 48 seconds and won. Parritt (6) is very proud of this talent and would show it to the whole school because it is interesting and exciting. “I like surprising people with how fast I can solve it.” Parritt (6) said.
People are usually surprised because of how fast he is. He has thought about turning this talent into something bigger in the future but probably will not.
Another hidden talent at HMS belongs to Steffen (7). Steffen (7) can make a clover shape with her tongue. This is an impressive skill that only 14.7% of the world can do. Born with this ability, Steffen (7) and her friends find this trick both fun and impressive.
“I think it’s cool that something so small can surprise people,” Steffen (7) said.
While this talent can’t be learned by everyone, Steffen’s (7) natural gift highlights the cool talent that most people don’t see.
Muchmore (7), a talented gymnast and dancer, brings acro to the table with a standing back tuck. This difficult move requires strength, technique, and a mental focus that many people do not have.
“I’ve worked really hard to build the strength for it.” Muchmore (7) said.
While she only recently started her dance journey, she has thought of pursuing this talent further by joining a college dance team in the future.
Hood (8), another student here at HMS has a unique trick, double jointed thumbs. Her unusual ability allows Hood (8) to bend her thumbs back farther than an average person. This crazy ability always surprises people when they see it for the first time.
“I love showing it to people just to see their reactions.” Hood (8) said.
It’s a skill Hood (8) has had since she was young, and loves showing it off. While this may seem like a small talent, it’s one that’s rare and catches people’s eyes.
HMS is full of hidden talents that make the school unique and different. Hidden talents are also something that can make a person perfectly them by having a cool trick to showcase. People will never truly know what someone can do until they ask, so stay unique.
