There are many opportunities for summer jobs, and one that might just stand out is camp counseling. The City of Fort Thomas recreation needs more camp counselors.
To run this camp, they need older students to sign up so that they can run a safe and fun camp. This is a good way to connect the community and show the kids why the city of Fort Thomas is so great.
“Our mission is always to host a fun, safe and engaging Summer camp for our community. We strive to be an affordable amenity offered in the NKY area.],” Kat Disney, the Recreation Coordinator for Fort Thomas said.
There are many steps to being trained how to be a camp counselor so that children can be safe.
“You will get CPR, first aid, and AED training, as well as a rundown of what camp will look like, where everything is located and answer any questions you might have,” Disney said.
There are responsibilities of the counselors that must be followed. In order to be a good counselor for the camp, they must have interest in things at the camp so they can help others during activities.
“Our first responsibility is to keep our campers safe. Next, would be to make sure that everyone is engaged while at camp, we have the opportunity to create a variety of activities during the day. Staff usually breaks into smaller groups and goes with the group that they have similar interests in,” Disney said.
There are many opportunities for leadership and to grow professionally. Now that the counselors are getting older, they need to be able to grow their leadership skills, and becoming a camp counselor is a great way to work on that skill.
“The cool thing about our camps is that leadership is fluid. You might take charge of craft time because you like art, then someone else might take a leadership role when it comes to teaching campers how to play 4-square or whiffle ball,” Disney said.
There are qualities that a good camp counselor needs to have. Being able to interact with others is a huge part of being a camp counselor.
“What makes a good camp counselor is honestly just being charismatic with the kids. You have to be open and interactive with them. It’s important you make a connection with them because they will listen to you more, they will be more well behaved, and it will be more fun for everyone,” camp counselor Ryder Perme (12) said.
