Winter is the most common time to get sick. The most common illnesses to get are the flu and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RVS). Many people are not educated on how to prevent sickness while it is going around.
According to a survey, around 96% of Highlands High School students have experienced some kind of sickness this year. The most commonly seen was a cold.
“I got a stomach bug in which I got a 104 fever, but what I was consuming was a lot of fruit and vitamins. I feel like the most important thing to do so you won’t be sick is washing your hands and making sure you don’t share your food or drinks with anyone that’s sick,” Vesper Hayes (10) said.
The most common way students have treated their sicknesses is medicine and sleep. Around half of the students stayed home from school when they were sick.
“Getting a lot of whole grain foods and staying hydrated is something that can help you stay healthy,” Mia Peluso (9) said.
Rhonda Wassom, Highlands High School nurse, has helped many students determine the plan of action for many illnesses at school.
“Having a good diet is one of the best things that you can do, so what you feed your gut and what you consume directly impact how you respond to illness and exposure,” Wassom said.
Newport High School is shut down and in Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) for two days due to the amount of students. This is caused by a rise in flu and stomach virus cases.
According to an article from WCPO News, “People are reporting the cough or fever, aches, and pains or sore throat, and it’s kind of an interesting visual of symptoms being reported right now,”Jennifer Mooney, District Director of Health for Northern Kentucky said.
As reports of these symptoms continue to rise, local officials are taking action to keep the community informed, prioritizing health and safety.
Newport is dealing with the sickness by prioritizing the health of their kids first.
Linknky News states, “Our priority is the health and well-being of our students, staff, and community, and we appreciate your understanding during this time. ” The district posted the news on social media.
According to Piedmont Healthcare, the top ways to prevent getting sick are flu vaccination, washing hands consistently, avoiding touching eyes/mouth, getting good sleep, and avoiding those who are already sick.
Immune systems are an important part of keeping people healthy. Improving the immune system can prevent students from getting sick.
The immune system is against disease-causing microorganisms. Students can improve their immune system by consuming whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and vitamins can help boost it.
When symptoms start to develop, remember to drink plenty of water, eat healthy, and get good sleep.
