Atlanta rapper, Jeffery Williams (also known as Young Thug), was released from jail on October 23, 2024, after pleading guilty to one gang-related charge, three drug-related charges, and two gun charges. After his plea, the judge called for his immediate release from jail. He now must serve fifteen years of probation and will return to prison for twenty years if his probation is broken.
Williams is a significant figure in the rap scene and his release has been long awaited. However, it comes with a few conditions. He is no longer permitted to be within the city limits of Atlanta unless it is for a wedding or funeral and he must leave the city within 48 hours. Williams is required to visit the city of Atlanta four times a year to hold anti-gang violence and anti-gang presentations. This will last for the next ten years.
Williams can also no longer associate with his co-defendants due to the nature of their crimes.
This includes YSL members Daemonte “Yah Gotti” Kendrick, Rodalius “Lil Rod” Ryan, Marquavious “Qua” Heuy, and Shannon “SB” Stillwell. YSL is Williams’ label as well as the name of the gang that was under investigation during the trial. The only exceptions to this rule are for Williams’ brother and his label mate Sergio Kitchens, more commonly known as Gunna.
Williams can no longer promote gang lifestyle in any way including within his lyrics, on social media, or even person-to-person. He can no longer use any language or hand signs relating to any gang as well. This even includes terms that Williams came up with, such as “slatt” which stands for “slime love all the time” which references his formerly fellow gang members or his “slimes”.
“He could rap about Christianity instead since he said thug stood for truly humble under God,” Teddy Krieg (10) said.
Williams also waived his second and fourth amendment rights even after his probation is complete. This means he can no longer carry a weapon. However, he can pay to have armed security, and that he can be searched at any time for any reason by law enforcement.
