Every Wednesday, the Chess Club meetings take place. Although not a massive group, the students involved in this club have great things to say about it. Here, we interview some of the members of the Highlands High School Chess Club about their experiences.
One of the many rising groups at Highlands is the chess club. With the early success of the club, the main contributions have been the students involved.
According to Noah Gregory, a first-year member of the club, he stated, “My experience here has been pretty good, as they’re pretty open and welcoming to the freshman.”
Perhaps the main struggle for freshmen, just now entering high school, is adapting to the new atmosphere and meeting new people.
Noah Gregory, a freshman at Highlands, said, “It’s definitely improved my connection with the other students, I share other classes with them, and despite that I didn’t know how to play chess, I’ve made friends.”
With the growing success of it with new members, we also asked the thoughts of Flynn Cook, a sophomore and president of the club.
While discussing the bonds of the people involved, Cook said, “I think everyone coming together is very unifying.” Everyone is together, everyone is equal. There’s no sense of division at all.”
“I’m very proud that freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are all there. It’s also very organized and on a more consistent schedule,” Flynn said when asked about the improvements that he’s witnessed within the club.
The Highlands Chess Club is a growing part of the school and is only getting better as time passes. Thank you all.
