In 2024, there have been disagreements about world news and events, specifically throughout the youth population.
Recently there have been protests involving the Palestine and Israel war and whether or not the U.S. should assist and fight in the war.
Many colleges and universities have had students who are protesting against this situation for differing reasons, leading to many accidents and even arrests.
Most of these protests were and are being held at Columbia University and UCLA. One of the main and broader arguments is freedom of speech.
A news article posted by ABC states that President Joe Biden stated: “The first is the right to free speech and for people to peacefully assemble and make their voices heard. The second is the rule of law. Both must be upheld.”
Vandalism, trespassing, forcing the cancellation of graduation, or intimidating people as not constitute peaceful protest.
So while people agree that everyone should have a right to protest and say what they would like, that does not mean they should have to fear being attacked on campus.
