Boys basketball Birds lose against Walton Verona in home opener

Yesterday, the Highlands High School boy’s basketball team lost its home opener 97-94, failing to the Walton Verona Wildcats.

Walton got the ball for the quarter one tip-off.  At one minute left in the quarter,  the Bluebirds were down by three, 25 to 28.

Then, in the second quarter, the Birds were still down by 13.

During the third quarter, Senior Zach Barth came out with a game-shifting 3-pointer at the beginning of the quarter.  From there, Highlands tied the score 46-46.

Barth said, “We fought hard after the first half but didn’t get enough rebounds and defensive stops. We’re looking to put in different defenses and offenses. That fit for us in our next practice to come back harder.“

The fourth quarter was a nail-biter. It came down to a matter of seconds. A last-minute set of missed free throws brought the game to a close. Unfortunately, Highlands lost 94-97.

Junior Will Herald said, “We scored the ball really well and we ended up with 94, 95, points and even though we got down we didn’t freak out and showed up the last two quarters.”
