HHS students go all out for Spirit Week (9/27-10/1)
This year’s Spirit Week at Highlands High School is different from last year’s Spirit Week, with a Penny War and Spirit Stick being added. Students and staff also participated in a pep rally on Friday, October 1 to end off the Spirit Week. The spirit stick is awarded to the most shown spirit by each grade level at the end of the week.
Each teacher was given a spreadsheet on Monday and every morning they would put in how many people dressed up and what grade they are in, which was how each grade’s spirit level was awarded.
The Penny War is a way of raising money for the Rae of Sunshine Foundation, which was named in honor of Taylor Rae Nolan, who tragically took her own life on January 8, 2019. The Rae of Sunshine Foundation focuses on suicide prevention.

MONDAY – PJ DAY
Students and staff showed up in their comfiest PJ’s to school on Monday.
TUESDAY – SURFERS V.S. BIKERS
Freshmen and sophomores put together their best surfer-inspired outfits, while juniors and seniors wore their biker attire.
Freshman Brenna Henderson said, “My favorite day is Surfers vs Bikers because I get to wear a Hawaiian shirt.”
WEDNESDAY – COUNTRY
Everyone goes full-on country, wearing cowboy hats, flannel, and cowboy boots.
Senior Eli Valentine said, “I like Country Day because I like cowboys.”
Junior Bailey Gabbard said, “I like country day cause I love flannels and they are just so cute.”
THURSDAY – DECADES
Seniors dressed in their best 90s outfit; juniors dressed in their best 80s look; sophomores styled their best 70s fit; freshmen rocked 60s outfits.
FRIDAY – BLUE OUT
Students show their school spirit by dressing in all blue and white, which are Highlands’ school colors.
Sophomore Maria Zechella said, “My favorite day of Spirit Week is Blue Out because it’s the easiest to dress for.”
This year’s spirit week was fun and exciting, a lot of the students participated in spirit week this year. It was so fun to see everyone’s outfits every day. This year the senior’s won the spirit stick and penny war.
