Big wins contribute to Highlands season ranking

The girl’s varsity soccer season has started off hot with a record of 5-2. Due to this early win, Norris believes that the ladybirds will do very well.

“I believe that we will be 15-1 as we enter the post-season. I do not think there is another team in Northern Kentucky who can beat us. I absolutely believe that the team is good enough to win the State Championship.”

For their first game, the Highlands girls varsity team found their way into the goal four times against Beechwood High School in the first half and the players who found added to the score were Senior Faith Broering, Sophomore Ava Lawhorn, Sophomore Claire Cavacini, and Senior Chloe Bramble.

The ladybirds defeated Beechwood at the beginning of the season, and according to Norris, it helped build their confidence.

“We defeated Beechwood 4-1 to start the season. Unfortunately, the game was called right after halftime when lightning struck in the area. I wish we could have played more because our confidence was growing by the minute in the match.”

In the second game against Assumption High School, the Birds continued their streak winning4-2. The players who scored were Cavacini, Broering, Sophomore Laney Smith, and Senior Jade Rehberger.

According to Norris, naming one player as the best is not something he does.

“I can say that Faith Broering was selected to be on the Preseason All America Watchlist based upon her sophomore and junior year performances. She also made the KHSAA First Team All-East State Team last year. She frequently takes on 2-3 players at a time and does a good job of changing the point of attack.”

During the game against Lafayette High School, it was a close match but the Birds pulled out the win with the final score being 2-1. Smith put the team on her back scoring two goals. Rehberger and Bramble both finished with one assist.

The Bird’s fifth game was against Newport Central Catholic, the birds bounced back with a win. It was a close game, although  Broering, Smith,  Cavacini, and Junior Anna Melson secured the win for the birds, due to them scoring goals. The final score was 4-3.

“We have three captains after this weekend. Jade Rehberger, Faith Broering, and Chloe Bramble. Each of them has earned the respect of the coaching staff and of the players through various services that they do.”

In the sixth game, The birds won with a score of  5-2 against Campbell County High School. With Cavacini, Bramble, Broering, and Smith getting a goal with four assists to help the birds score another win.

Sadly in their seventh game, they lost to East Central (St. Leon), IN with the score being 1-0

But after that loss, they bounced back with them scoring 10 goals against Eastern (Sardina), Ohio with the final score being 10-0. Cavacini had 3 goals, Smith also had 3 goals, Melson with one, Bramble with one, Rehberger with one, and finally Broering with the last goal of the game.

In their ninth game, they won 2-1 against Lexington Chalothic High School and the game was a Lady Knights Challenge Cup. for the goals Smith and Cavacini were the players with the goals.

In their second Lady Knights Challenge Cup, they won 3-0 against Assumption High School with Smith scoring two goals and Rehberger with the other goal.

For their last Lady Knights Challenge Cup game they sadly lost 3-0 against Notre Dame and their record of the season right now is 8-3.

The ladybirds play next on August 27 at Tower Park against Saint Henry High School.
