On March 6, the girls’ and boys’ varsity Track and Field team traveled to Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center’s athletic track to compete with many schools around the area for their state competition. This would be their last chance to compete the best they can for the indoor season of 2025.
The Birds came into the competition strong with the girls 4×8 run by Isla Meyn (9), Ava Perry (9), Georgia Zengel (9), and Hope Darnell (9) being the fastest all Freshman relay in the state. A little later freshman Emme Wilke finished 4th as the highest freshman jumper in the state.
“Being part of the fastest all freshman 4×8 relay was intimidating with athletes around me being older, but I was excited for the challenge. Overall it was a great experience and I think it will push us to keep doing our best at every meet,” Meyn said.
Before finishing our girls events, Aaliyah Haratuku (9) finished 5th overall in the 55 meter hurdles and even became a State medalist.
“It feels amazing to finish 5th overall at state. It proves to me that hard work pays off and that it is so worth it,” Haretuku said.
The guy birds kept state going with Andrew Swope (10) finishing 21th in his shot put event.
The birds kept going with the 4×2 run by Colin Utz (12), Quentin Tomlin (9), Graham Strange (11), and Evan Wallace (12) beating Greenwood in their section and ending 21th overall
“Usually going into the relay my mindset is to stay with others, if they’re running faster that is even better because it drives me to do the same,” Tomlin said.
Georgia Zengel (9) finishes the girls events strong by closing out 20th in the 3200 with a new personal record of 41 seconds.
While we had a lot of good competition around us, the boy birds closed us off, beating two teams in their section finishing 17th overall in the 4×4 also run by Utz, Tomlin, Strange, and Wallace.
The Birds’ next meet for outdoor season will be on March 22.
