On Thursday, February 6th the girls’ basketball team took on the Lloyd Memorial Juggernauts at 7:30 at Highlands High School. The Birds were coming off two tough losses against Assumption and Campbell County and were looking to turn it around.
The Birds came out hot with this motivation, making three three-pointers, driving to the paint, and sinking free throws to score 23 points in the first quarter. Their defense limited Lloyd to only seven points in the first quarter.
Moving into the second quarter, the Birds kept the same mentality, constantly driving to the paint and working on individual moves. This helped the Birds to keep dominating throughout the first half.
“This week the coaches have been stressing to us getting into the paint so tonight we all wanted to do that and the results definitely showed,” said Katie Bucher (11).
At halftime, the score was 45-11, with the Birds staying on top.
At halftime, senior members of the girls’ and boys’ track teams were honored. These members were Evelyn Hopping (12), Sarah Jones (12), Brady Robinson (12), Colin Utz (12), and Evan Wallace (12).
In the second half, the Birds continued to do what worked and continued to control the game. Their defensive mindset continued, with multiple steals and fast break points, limiting the Juggernauts’ offense. The Birds ended the game with a win with a score of 67-25.
“Based on this game I’m really proud we all came together as a team to stop the 2-game losing streak with lots of energy and I’m proud we all around had lots of fun out on the court,” said Maddie Barlow (11).
Kaylee Mills (11) led the Birds with 15 points, followed by Bucher with 12 points, and Avery Barber (11) and Barlow with 7 points.
The Birds made 23 field goals, seven three-pointers, and went 14 for 17 from the free-throw line.
The team hopes to continue moving forward in the right direction and keep the winning streak alive.
“I am most proud of the team because we have faced so much adversity through the season and we are finally playing as the team we started playing like at the beginning of the season. I feel like our most recent win against Lloyd is going to set the pace for the remainder of the season games and set the tone for the postseason,” said Mills.
The Birds’ next game is Wednesday, February 12 at 7:00 vs. Bracken County at Bracken County.
