On January 17, the girls’ varsity basketball team traveled to Newport Central Catholic (NCC) to face off against the thoroughbreds in a district match-up. This game would decide who would get the 1 seed in the district tournament.
The Birds won the tip and kept the momentum throughout the first quarter. The Birds were on fire, making 5 three-pointers in the first quarter alone. They finished the quarter winning 21-14.
“Honestly I think the first quarter went the best for us. We all came out with so much energy to win,” said Maren Orme (9).
The Birds kept the lead throughout the second quarter, scoring 15 points to make the score 36-26 at halftime.
While NCC attempted to fight back, the Birds kept battling to maintain their lead throughout the whole game. The game’s final score was 62-43, resulting in a Bluebirds win.
“This game helped us see what happens when we do well on defense and how that can carry to our offense to be successful,” said Katie Bucher (11).
The Birds were led in scoring by Orme, scoring a career-high 27 points, followed by Kaylee Mills (11) and Marissa Green (12) with 11 points.
Green finished the night shooting 83.3% from the field, going 5 for 6. Orme finished the night shooting 50% from the three-point line with Mills following at 42.9%, going 3 for 7.
Green also led the team in rebounds with 9. The team had a total of 38 rebounds.
The Birds’ next game is January 21 vs. Ryle.
