On Friday, November 29, The Highlands High School’s football team took on Cooper for the state semi-finals. The winning team would advance to the state championship at the University of Kentucky on Kroger Field.
With the score standing at 61-23 Cooper, Highlands faces one of the biggest losses of the year.
“It was disappointing to come up short-handed, but I did everything to the best of my abilities over the last four years and left no regrets after my last game,” Devon James (12), a running back for the football team said.
James had three rush attempts and11 yards rushing. Jack White (12) added 18 rush attempts, 85 yards rushing, and one touchdown.
“This program has improved a lot since I started dressing for varsity my freshman year. After playing my whole sophomore and junior year I’d say we have changed as people and a team to be the best we can.” Max Merz (11), a guard said.
Jackson Arnold (12) had eight pass receptions, 91 yards received, and one touchdown scored.
“For my last year, I think we have a strong chance to still make our way to state. We are a talented group and nothing can stop us from performing to the highest of standards,” Mario Litmer (11), starting quarterback said.
Litmer had 26 pass completions, 44 pass attempts, 263 yards passing, and two touchdown completions.
Cooper will advance to state after Friday’s game. Their next game will be against Bowling Green on December 7 at 8 PM.
