On April 12, 2025, Louisiana football star Kyren Lacy tragically passed away. The death was ruled a suicide, after police were brought out due to a “weapons disturbance call” from Lacy, who fired a gun into the ground during an argument. He took his life in his car shortly after.
“Our lives have changed forever, and this will never be ok, but God needed my baby more than he was needed here,” Kyren Lacy’s father, Kenny Lacy, said.
Lacy was previously in an accident, where he had killed someone while putting others at risk. He turned himself in and got out on bail, but was given serious charges. He was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle. These events ultimately led to Lacy’s fall in football, with no longer being able to play professionally and no prospects of being drafted. Lacy was potentially facing five years in jail and a fine of $5,000.
The family of Lacy is still trying to process the tragic passing, which came so soon and unexpectedly.
“It is with profound sorrow that we confirm the tragic passing of Kyren Lacy. First and foremost, we ask that the public and the media give his family the space and time they need to grieve this unimaginable loss in peace,” Lacy’s attorney, Matthew Ory, said.
Just eleven days later, another tragedy in football happened.
Derrick Harmon, the defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, was drafted to the NFL, only for his mom, Tiffany Saine, to pass away on the same night.
She had been on life support since 2022, due to a stroke and multiple past brain surgeries. The stroke had also left her completely paralyzed on her left side.
“On behalf of the entire Pittsburgh Steelers organization, I extend our deepest condolences to Derrick Harmon and his family during this difficult time,” Steelers president Art Rooney said.
Harmon expressed his thoughts on his mother, her struggle, and her resilience to keep fighting.
“My mom wasn’t with me; she’s at the hospital right now on life support, so that was a little bittersweet, because she worked just as hard as me to get to this moment,” Harmon said.
Regardless, hearts go out to Kyren Lacy’s Family and Derrick Harmon as he navigates through his grief on the field.
