As the Highlands Varsity Boys Basketball team prepares for the district championship, tension fills the air, but so does determination. The players have spent numerous hours preparing for these games, ready to channel energy into a winning performance.
“I prepare by getting more shots up and watching films, and to prepare as a team, we talk about the game plan,” Vinny Listerman (11) said.
Kevin Listerman, the head coach, highlighted the importance of a well-executed game plan, stressing the need for focus, and strategy as the team approaches the games.
“We need to execute the game plan in these district games,” Coach Listerman said.
The goals for the district tournament include a commitment to the team, highlighting the importance of communication towards team achievements.
“I believe in being a team player, so I just want us to win,” Listerman (11) said.
In the high-stakes of tournament games, mindset is a crucial role. This stresses the importance of managing expectations.
“Take it one play at a time and don’t get ahead of yourself,” Listerman (11) says
This strengthens the mindset by emphasizing the intensity of competition and highlighting the focus required to stay sharp.
“In districts, we can’t afford to let our guard down; every possession counts,” Coach Listerman said.
Balancing academics and athletics adds a challenge, especially with the pressure of district competitions. It is important to highlight a strategy for maintaining the two.
“I use academics to get my mind off the games and allow myself to not feel like it is as big as it is to make sure I stay out of my head during this,” Listerman (11) said.
Acknowledging that learning from past encounters is essential for developing the game plan. This reflects a growth mindset, vital for improvement and success in the competitive realm of high school basketball.
“Absolutely…our regular season games against these opponents are critical for us,” Coach Listerman said.
The boys basketball team faces the challenges ahead with a commitment to teamwork and mental resilience. As the team steps onto the court for the district tournament, the goal is not only to win but to show off the spirit of growth throughout the season.
