The start of the Highlands High School basketball season brings in excitement and energy, with the first games setting the tone for the teams’ journeys ahead. For both the girls’ and boys’ teams, these opening games serve as crucial opportunities to showcase their hard work, skill development, and teamwork after months of preparation.
On Monday, December 2, the boys’ season started with a bang. After a four-game losing streak dating back to last season, Highlands finally pulled out a win. They played the Scott High School Eagles and got a win of 77-62. The Bluebirds also won last year when they were matched against the Eagles. Even with the home advantage, the Eagles were not able to pull out a victory.
Charlie Messmer (11), had a total of 17 points and scored four free throws.
“I think that winning our first game gave us a lot of confidence and set us up for many more wins later in the season,” Messmer said.
Vinny Listerman (11), had nine rebounds and scored 12 total points for the game.
“We have been working really hard to get ready for this season, and playing like a well-connected team has really been in our favor,” Listerman said.
The boys’ team’s next game is Thursday, December 12 against the Cincinnati Trailblazers.
The girls’ basketball team took a win over Dixie Heights High School for their first game of the season on Tuesday, December 3. Their teamwork and communication are their secrets to a great upcoming season.
Maren Orme (9) had 22 points in the game and made seven free throws.
“I am so excited to be starting off this new season with a win and I know that if we work hard enough and stay connected as a team we will have many more wins in the future,” said Orme.
Marissa Green (12), scored a total of 11 points and scored five free throws. Although, she has had an unfortunate start to her senior season. Green strained her calf, but with one to two weeks of rest, she should be back and ready to lead her team.
“I know that this is just a minor setback, and when I am back and playing this game with my teammates, we will be unstoppable,” Green said.
These two teams are continuing to work hard and make sure that they are playing like well oiled teams. The girls’ next game will be Saturday, December 7 against Walton Verona but see the team at their home base on Tuesday December 10 against Holy Cross.
