The girls and boys varsity soccer teams faced Newport Central Catholic in the District finals for a double header. The boys won 4-1, the goals were scored by Ethan Adhikary (11), Luis McVicker (11), and two goals were scored by Nick Wilson (12). The girls won 1-0 with a goal by Kaylee Mills (12).
The atmosphere for these types of games, especially double headers, is always energetic and exciting.
“The atmosphere was good and the energy was really high, I feel like everyone wanted to win and give 100% effort, which I thought played a part in us winning,” said Hope Darnell (10).
After they won, both teams were happy and relieved to have secured a win going into the region tournament.
“After the game, it was just like a relief of stress, and it was just like a weight getting lifted off our shoulders, and it was just very fun,” said Wade Fedders (11).
There were awards given out after the game. The District All-Tournament Team award was given to Hope Darnell (10) and Katie Bucher (12) for the girls team, and for the boys team, the award was given to Wade Fedders (11) and Nick Wilson (12). The MVP award was given to Kaylee Mills (12) and Luis McVicker (11).
Getting these awards can feel like a big accomplishment, and it feels like all the hard work is being appreciated.
“I was very excited to get an award, and I was very relieved that my hard work paid off,” said Darnell.
Although these awards are great, sometimes it feels like everyone should get something because it takes the whole team to win.
“I was very grateful and very honored to receive an award, but I just think our whole team deserves an award for all of our work,” said Fedders.
The MVP award is a huge accomplishment for any player who gets it. It instills confidence in any player.
“I was shocked that I got an award. It felt very relieving, and it has given me confidence going into the region tournament,” said Mills.
Scoring in an atmosphere of games like these is a huge deal if it is a close game.
“I was honestly shocked when I scored, but to see everyone jumping up and down and cheering me on was honestly just like an amazing feeling, and I loved it,” said Mills.
Scoring in general during the tournament is a huge deal and can be really exciting for everyone on the team. Scoring against a local team also adds to the excitement.
“It felt good to score. It was the first time scoring district, and it’s always felt good scoring against NCC,” said McVicker.
Going into the region tournament with a win is always a good feeling. It gives the team confidence to prove to themselves and everyone else in the 9th region that the team can compete.
“I am just looking forward to proving that we’re actually a contender and just proving all the people who looked down on us wrong,” said Fedders
Going into the region means that the competition gets higher, which gives each team the chance to show that they can play against good competition.
“I’m looking forward to playing high-level teams and showing everyone that we can play skilled teams. I’m also excited to hopefully make it to state,” said Darnell
The boys and girls varsity soccer teams get the chance to take on the 9th region together and hopefully both teams will also take state together.
