Last season, the team took four wrestlers to the state tournament after hoping to take seven. One wrestler finished in the regional tournament as an alternate for the state tournament, and two others were injured and sick. To create stronger competition, they have added more teams to their schedule.
“We have just as strong a team this year as we did last year, and hope to send at least half of our lineup back down to the state tournament,” Coach Colin Roth said.
The team has thirteen away matchups and two home matchups. This season, its biggest competitors are Campbell County High School, Covington Catholic High School, and Walton-Verona High School.
“Our region has a lot of tough wrestling competition and is one of the toughest regions to get out of to qualify for the state tournament,” Roth said.
The team is working together during their off-season to prepare for the upcoming season and adding more Ohio competitors to their schedule.
“We’ve seen good competition in years past, but I think this year will be some of the strongest competition we’ve seen,” Roth said.
Merrick Boberg (10) is said to be the season’s breakout player. He is spending time preparing by working in practice, and his goal is to wrestle through the season.
“I’m most confident about my discipline,” Boberg said.
TJ Hicks (12) is said to be the strongest player of the season. He is practicing every day and always doing something wrestling-related, and his goal for the season is to win state.
“I go to work every day and try my hardest in everything,” Hicks said.
