The Highlands Boys Soccer team took on one of their biggest rivals, the Newport Central Catholic (NCC) Thoroughbreds, this Tuesday at NKU.
This was a revenge game considering that NCC beat the Birds in penalty kicks both in the regular season and the postseason last year.
Both teams came ready to fight, but Harrison Gamble (12) started the game strong with a penalty kick as well as another goal in the first half to put the score at 2-0.
The fight continued with Gamble scoring another goal and with NCC quickly countering with a penalty kick, making the score 3-1 with over halfway to go in the second half.
The Birds fought hard and earned themselves two more goals, another by Gamble and the other scored by Hudson Hargis (9), his first varsity goal. The final score of the game was 5-1 which bumped the Birds record to 3-2-2.
This was a big win for the Birds and ended their losing and tying streak of four games.
“I think last night’s win helped us gain momentum for later in the season since we had gone a long stretch without winning and last night’s win helped,” said Ashton Pawlak (12).
The Birds hope to continue this winning streak as they play a tough game against Ryle next Tuesday, September 17th at Newport High School.
