In their 78th matchup against the Covington Catholic Colonels, the Highlands Bluebirds emerged with a great win with a score of 32-22, making a comeback from last year’s loss.
The Colonels came out with a lot of intensity and scored the first two touchdowns. Adapting to this, the Birds scored with a 5-yard run by Rio Litmer (11) and a two-point conversion by Adam Surrey (12) at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Highlands forced a safety and followed it up with a touchdown by Jack White (12) and a kick by Logan Nickleman. This gave the Bluebirds the lead with a score of 17-14.
During the third quarter, Surrey added a touchdown, followed by a 2-point conversion after a pass from Cale Harris (10). The Colonels tried to come back with a touchdown, putting the score at 25-22.
Gabe Williams (10) capped the game during the fourth quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run and another kick from Nickleman. This secured the win for the Bluebirds and put the final score as 32-22.
Highlands totaled 83 passing yards, with Litmer leading and going 8 for 12 on completed passes. The Birds had 286 rushing yards, with White leading and Williams following. Surrey led in receiving yards, with Tyus McCarter (12) following.
With this win, the Birds are off to a good start, with a 2-0 record.
