Highlands track has begun, and it started with a bang at the CCHS Quad 1 track meet. Highlands boys track won the meet by a landslide, finishing with 209 points, while second place (Campbell County) only had 185 points. The Highlands girls had 69 points, coming in 4th place.
Events like the 200-meter dash were dominated by Highlands. Of the top 12 runners, 9 were from Highlands, with Senior Ben Hack taking in first place with a time of 23.41.
Hack said: “This is my 4th season of track with Highlands and I’m looking to break a lot of records for Highlands and maybe even in the region. Our coaches are super helpful and they can help me and the rest of the team get there.”
Though Hack and others are experienced with track, there are many new runners like Sophomores Dom Moreno and Eli Ellison.
Moreno said: “This is my first year ever doing track, and I’m just looking to get better and increase my times while also having fun with my friends.”
As for the girls, many seniors will pave the way for the younger generation by helping and teaching them how to enhance their running style and speed. Runners like Senior Annie Ellison, are one of these role models.
Ellison said: “There is so much potential in our freshmen and sophomores, I am very excited to hear about them when I am out of Highlands High School.”
Throughout the team, excitement takes its place as the bluebirds keep working and grinding to be the best they can, and have the best season possible. The team is already off to a great start on the season with lots of time drops and more to come.
