The Highlands Freshman baseball team played their season opener against Trinity Saturday morning at Trinity High School. The boys started their season with a tough loss 13-4 against one of the best teams in the state. The boys are learning how to play as a team and this was a good game for them to learn.
Freshman Kai Andreson said: “It was tough playing the best team in the state for our first game. None of us really knew how to play together as a team, so it was hard to play such a great team to open the season.”
The team doesn’t have a set group of starters and is still figuring out how to work together.
Freshman Micheal Tincher said: “The starters depend day to day as we play, there isn’t a set of players who will start every game, and I think everyone on this team is good enough to start for us.”
The team has great bones, but knowing it was the first game of their freshman year, they have a lot of room for improvement knowing that they will play together for the next 4 years.
Anderson said: “Our team was not at our best. Like I said, it was our first game together. New coaching, new plays, new defensive alignments all made it hard for us to adjust in one game.”
Trinity is not in the region for us, so they will not have to worry about them for the region tournament. Ryle and Covington Catholic are some of the biggest competitions for the freshmen in our region.
Tincher says: “I think the biggest competition this season in the region will be Ryle, but we will see when we start region play.”
The team has a lot of potential for the season and for their upcoming high school career. Throughout the practices and games, the team will learn how to work with each other, and how to play as a team.
