Selection Sunday was held on December third. Probably the CFB (college football) committee’s toughest selection Sunday yet. With eight dominant teams— three of which are undefeated, and the other five with one single loss.
Many fans wanted to have a last-minute eight-man playoff, to keep it fair and not leave teams that should be in the playoffs out.
Sophomore Grayson Schwalbach said, “I feel like the playoffs would actually be a lot more interesting, especially with all of the tough teams that would be involved.” A lot of people think there is no way to take the teams this year and only take 4 for a chance to win a national championship.
The official CFP rankings came out as: Michigan(1), Washington(2), Texas(3), and Alabama(4). This leaves FSU(13-0), Georgia(12-1), Ohio State(11-1), and Oregon(10-2 who only lost to #2 Washington, 2 times) out of the playoffs when arguably all four of these teams have the potential to win a championship.
When asked about FSU being undefeated and missing out, Schwalbach said, “I think FSU was robbed, I don’t think a team is defined by one player [Jordan Travis], I think the rest of the team is good enough to be able to go compete for a national championship.”
The big argument is wins and losses vs. strength of schedule. Senior Leo Fenik said, “I think the strength of schedule matters more. If you go through a gauntlet of a schedule and play 4-5 top 25 teams and a couple in the top 10 and only lose one game that is more impressive than going undefeated against easier teams in an easier conference.”
For example, the Texas Longhorns(12-1) top opponents they beat this year were Alabama(12-1)
on the road and Oklahoma state(9-4) and acquiring a loss to Oklahoma(10-2). Now a team like the Georgia Bulldogs (the two-time defending National Champions) who beat teams like Tennessee (8-4), Ole Miss(10-2), Missouri(10-2), Kentucky (8-5) and after only losing to Alabama(12-1) are no longer in the playoffs after holding the #1 seed the entire year.
With this being the last year of the 4-man CFP, the NCAAF will no longer have to be in a predicament like this ever again. A 12-man playoffs this year would have consisted of must-watch matchups in the entire bracket. Matchups like No.8 Oregon vs. No. 9 Missouri, No. 5 FSU vs. No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 7 Ohio State vs. No.10 Penn State. With that being said, who will win it all this year?
