Yesterday, May 30, at Thomas More Stadium, Highlands varsity baseball defeated the Ryle Raiders 5-4 in the opening round of the 9th region tournament. In last year’s 9th region baseball tournament the Birds lost to Ryle 6-4, however, Highlands flipped the script this year.
Highlands persisted through three rain delays throughout the game. Senior Abe Hills started for the Bluebirds on the mound allowing six hits and two runs in 5.1 innings. Junior Ryan Deburger relieved Hills and allowed two hits and two runs.
The birds started slow on offense going runless until the fifth inning when a Ryle error allowed the birds to tally a run and then Junior Jack Hendrix extended the lead when he hit a three-run home run also in the bottom of the fifth giving the birds a 4-1 lead. Ryle tied up the game in the top of the seventh inning. In the extra inning, Junior Brennan Kelsay won the game for the Birds on a walk-off squeeze bunt.
On Saturday, the Bluebirds will face off against St. Henry at Thomas More stadium at 5:00 P.M. St. Henry won in their game against Highlands in the regular season.
