Highlands High School Athletics – Week of 1/11/21 Wrap Up
In the past week, athletes at Highlands High School have been very busy in their respective sports. Girls and boys basketball, swimming, diving, wrestling, and boys and girls bowling all competed.
Basketball
The girls team hosted the Ryle Raiders on Tuesday, January 12. Although Highlands was defeated 55-37, there were many prominent players who stood out during the game. The Ladybirds were led by Rory O’Hara’s 18 points and six rebounds and senior Kelsey Listerman’s nine points and three rebounds. The ladybirds lost another heartbreaker 61-59. Three players for Highlands scored points in the double digits. Listerman had 17, junior Cecilia Shick had 15, and O’Hara had 12. The next day, they bounced back against district opponent Bellevue High School when they won by a landslide 58-12. Eighth-grader Marisa Green led the birds with 12 points. The girls look to add to the winning column again as they face Oldham County on Tuesday, January 19.
The boys basketball team played Dixie Heights and came out as victors at the end of the second overtime. The Birds were led by senior Sam Vinson with his second double-double of the season as he scored 34 points and recorded ten rebounds. Sophomore Will Herald finished the game with 20 points and 3 rebounds. On Saturday, January 17 the Birds traveled down to Lexington to face the Lexington Catholic Knights. The game didn’t go the Birds’ way. The final score was 73-57. Vinson scored 19 points and junior Zach Barth put up ten points. The team looks to bounce back against the Boone County Rebels on January 21.
Bowling
This past Tuesday, the female Bowling Birds took down the Thoroughbreds from Newport Central Catholic. They earned six out of the seven available points. The Birds won three out of the four regular games and both of the baker games. They won the overall pin count as well adding to their impressive win. The Bowling Birds were led by seniors Abby Bach and Tessa Killen with their high scores being 213 and 165 respectively on the day.
At Southern Lanes, The co-ed Bowling Birds took on the Bishop Brossart Mustangs. The game came down to a pin count used as a tie-breaker with Highlands winning by 32.
Swim and Dive
On January 13, the swim and dive team competed in a meet at Oak Hills High School. Both the boys and girls won with the boys racking up 40 points and the girls accumulating 41 points. Seniors Mac Russell and Jack Banks both scored 12 points which were the most on the team. Eighth-grader Regan Moore scored 11 points which was the most for the girls. Sophomore Cici Murphy won the diving meet for the girls.
Wrestling
Wrestling had a meet on Wednesday, January 13. They beat Scott High School with a final score of 40-36. They then lost to Hamilton County 38-34. In their final match, they lost 48-11 to Clermont County.
