DWTS, premiered on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m. on ABC. This marked the show’s 20th anniversary. Many viewers tuned in to watch celebrities try ballroom dancing and to see strong performances and excellent choreography from the pros. A pro is someone who has danced on DWTS for multiple years and is trained to teach people how to ballroom dance.
Fourteen celebrities stepped into the ballroom on Tuesday to perform their first dance of the season. The judges, not expecting much, were pleasantly surprised by many of the celebrities. Even though no eliminations took place during week one, it was still an action-packed, energy-filled episode.
Judges Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli held down the judges’ panel while judge Carrie Ann Inaba was out sick. There has been a ton of commotion about why Inaba would miss the first episode of the season. But really, she was just under the weather and needed some rest. She hopes to be back next week in good health. Derek Hough was a DWTS pro for nine years.
Hough was one of the most experienced dancers to star on DWTS, which makes him a very valuable judge. Bruno Tonioli was a popular choreographer for artists such as Elton John and Tina Turner, as well as for many TV shows and movies. There are also two hosts returning this season: Alfonso Ribeiro, a mirrorball winner from DWTS, and Juliana Hough, a DWTS pro. They give the show high energy and keep it entertaining.
This season on DWTS, there are 14 celebrities: Jen Affleck, Hilaria Baldwin, Jordan Chiles, Baron Davis, Alix Earle, Dylan Efron, Corey Feldman, Danielle Fishel, Elaine Hendrix, Scott Hoying, Robert Irwin, Lauren Jauregui, and Whitney Leavitt.
Some students have extreme opinions about the show.
“The show is really good, I’m rooting for Robert Irwin and Whitney Carson,”Layla Hurtt (9) said.
Irwin and Carson earned the highest score on Tuesday night, Derek Hough calling their performance, “probably the best first dance I’ve ever seen on this show” which means a lot coming from such an experienced dancer.
“My favorites were Alix Earle and Val. I loved their choreography.” Georgia Loizer (9) said.
The show also included an exciting opening number performed by the pros, adding even more energy to the night. As the competition continues, fans can expect many more surprises.
There is so much in store for this year’s season of Dancing with the Stars, with a lineup of memorable performances and nostalgic hits.
