The Broadway musical Hamilton is now in movie theaters, playing from Sept. 5-16. Hamilton was produced in 2015 by Lin-Manuel Miranda, inspired by Ron Chernow’s biography Alexander Hamilton. Hamilton was immediately popular, released as a movie on Disney+ in 2020, where it gained even more attention. This year to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the movie version of Hamilton will be starring in movie theaters for the first time.
Seeing Hamilton as a movie has many benefits that watching the musical live does not have. On the big screens, it can be much easier to spot smaller details. Each facial expression, choreographed dance and even sound is enhanced and amplified in ways that the live performance of Hamilton is unable to do.
Elena Shadwell (10) described her experience watching the movie version of this classic production:
“I really love the movie, I’ve seen it a few times. I do wish they included some behind the scenes footage or some interviews with the cast and crew,” Shadwell said.
As incredible as it is to see the original cast of Hamilton on the big screen, there are other noticeable differences between seeing the musical in person and as a movie.
Seeing the musical on a stage live has been a valuable experience to many people not just at Highlands, but throughout the world. Whether it is performed on Broadway in New York or the Aronoff in Cincinnati, the production of Hamilton has been an immersive experience.
Emma Hood (11) had the opportunity to see the show live in March of 2023. “Seeing it live was a great experience, it was really cool to see everything up close and personal and it definitely stuck with me, it’s even helped me do well in history classes like AP World,” Hood said.
Both Hamilton the live musical and Hamilton the movie are incredible experiences, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. When watching the movie, you are less likely to miss the small details, but watching the musical in real time can be more engaging.
“I’ve seen both Hamilton live and Hamilton as a movie, and it was really fun… I don’t know which I liked better but they were both great experiences. I definitely plan on seeing Hamilton in theaters.” Ellie Schilling (11) said.
Though some prefer the movie over seeing the show live, or vice versa, the film coming to theaters is set to sell out nationwide. If you are available while Hamilton is in theaters, be sure to catch this first ever showing near you.
