Cincinnati Reds Rookie Tyler Callihan suffered a fractured left forearm on Monday, May 5, in a game against the Atlanta Braves.
According to Major League Baseball (MLB), Callihan attempted a sliding catch in left field in the third inning that ultimately failed; he collided with the wall, fracturing his radius and ulna.
Callihan was taken into surgery on May 6. He is expected to make a full recovery.
According to ESPN, Callihan is expected to be sidelined for 6-8 weeks as he recovers from his injury. Yahoo Sports reported that he will be replaced on the field by outfielder Blake Dunn, who joined the Cincinnati Reds last year.
Jill Taylor, the sports nutrition teacher at Highlands, anticipates a long recovery for Callihan:“When he ran into the wall, his arm was completely deformed… He probably won’t be back to full strength for at least 6 to 8 months,” Taylor said.
Unfortunately, the Reds took a loss in this game, upsetting a lot of fans. Many believe that Callihan’s catch being declared not a catch is unfair, as he had caught the ball before crashing into the wall. Especially with the severity of his arm injury, many are arguing that it should have been an out.
Penelope Kolb (11) works at the Reds stadium and witnessed the aftermath of this event.
“I was working the game at Bally House in the suites, and a lot of people were panicking. I don’t know much about baseball or arm injuries, but the footage looked pretty nasty,” Kolb said.
The injury is not only devastating for Callihan himself, but also to his team and Reds fans, as he showed great potential. Many hoped he could have potentially changed the tides for the Reds, who have been struggling since 2012.
